Composer, Arranger, Guest Conductor, Clinician
For over 45 years, D. O. has been teaching, conducting, and writing music for musicians ranging from middle school to the professional level.
He is in high demand for new commissions, clinics, and guest conducting appearances. Comfortable with band, wind ensemble, jazz band, jazz combo, orchestra, and chamber music, Owens is available to work with almost any type of musicial organization or situation.
“The Concerto for Wind Symphony never ceases to surprise me. Every time I hear it it’s as if it is brand new. I suspect it has to do with the improvisatory nature of D.O.’s sound palette. His writing is conversational, argumentative, pleading, joking, grieving – his compositions are like people.”

"There are simply not enough words that can adequately describe how much of a positive influence Don Owens has had on my education, career, and band program. Even to describe him as a "master teacher" doesn't do it justice, as I don't believe there to be a finer triple threat (classical, jazz, and composition) music educator and conductor anywhere. He has a way with kids that is as inspiring to me as it is to them, and I am always amazed by how much better he is able to make them in such a short amount of time.
One of the favorite moments of my career was when we had a chance to commission D.O. for a work featuring saxophonist Matt Olson that we premiered with D.O. conducting. The kids had a wonderful time learning the piece and working with D.O. that it was not only a highlight of that concert, but of the entire year."
